Earthenware kendi have been found in the extensive prehistoric settlement site of Gilimanuk on the west coast of Bali, with associated burials, dated to 150-350 AD.

Nagas or snakes in Hindu mythology are conceived as the arching rainbow that links earth, water and heaven. Snakes are amphibious. They are associated with life forces and fertility. The snake's power can be for both good and evil. The snake is a common motif in Southeast Asia, and is a universal symbol: the Garden of Eden; the Greek association with healing; the Naga king, Mucalinda, sheltered Buddha from a storm by arching his hood over Buddha's head and coiling 7 times around him.
