Background: Bali Hinduism is called the holy water religion. Water in containers is made holy by Brahman priests for use in Balinese religious ceremonies, like temple ceremonies, tooth-filings and weddings.

The priest utters ritual prayers, sprinkles and swallows some. He does this 3 times. After which, the water inside is deemed to be holy water - air tirta - with great religious vitality and validity.

Background: The word "kendi" derives from an old Sanskrit word, which suggests that they were introduced from India.

They have a more or less rounded body, a straight neck, a mouth and a spout set at an angle on the shoulder.

One feature of a kendi that never varies is the absence of a handle. Once a handle is added, it becomes a ewer, bottle, teapot or some other form.

Earthenware kendi have been found in the extensive prehistoric settlement site of Gilimanuk on the west coast of Bali, with associated burials, dated to 150-350 AD.

Background: A pair of crowned and interlaced nagas form the top part of a Balinese temple decoration called a salang.

Nagas or snakes in Hindu mythology are conceived as the arching rainbow that links earth, water and heaven. Snakes are amphibious.

They are associated with life forces and fertility. The snake's power can be for both good and evil.

The snake is a common motif in Southeast Asia, and is a universal symbol: the Garden of Eden; the Greek association with healing; the Naga king, Mucalinda, sheltered Buddha from a storm by arching his hood over Buddha's head and coiling 7 times around him.
