Lampung in South Sumatra became very rich supplying the Sriwijayan empire and other parts of Indonesia with pepper and forest products.

Among other things it is famous for its exotically decorated beaded baskets.

They are used in rituals and daily life and nowadays the boxes are very handsome interior decoration.

Their purpose was to store jewelry, clothing and wedding gifts. The basket was given to the bride so she can keep these things in it during her married life. This kind of gift giving takes place among prominent families.

They are skilfully and painstakingly made by hand of plaited bamboo covered with cotton cloth and embellished with colorful beads and shells.

They are decorated with wonderful arabesque-style foliage, dragons, elephants, lotuses, rows of triangles and other geometric shapes.
