Background: The Bumblebee Dance was specially choreographed by Mario for two dancers from Peliatan, near Ubud, for the dance company's tour to Europe and the United States in 1952.
The female dancer has two long pieces of chiffon, which are her wings. She is a bumblebee in the garden, flitting from flower to flower. A young male bumblebee appears and they dance around one another, finally lightly embracing.
The story of the dance tour is described vividly in Dancing Out of Bali by John Coast. He arranged the tour.

"Well what a Parcel!
I have been sitting here for the last three days trying to think how
to say THANK YOU.
Everything has arrived in perfect condition just as it was Natasha's
Birthday and she was here to unwrap it all.
It has far exceeded my expectations and the head dress alone is out
of this world. That was my biggest fear that it may not fit but everything
is perfect.
The whole costume is on my sofa and I can not stop looking at it.
I want you to know that none of this would of been possible without
your kind help and it is so appreciated by both me and Natasha.
I would like to stay in touch and let you know how she gets on when
she dances in September and again I can not believe how lucky we were
to have had someone so willing to help us.
Our best wishes to you and thanks again.
Kindest regards
Debbie and Natasha"
"The competition was last weekend and she looked stunning.
The effect on stage was superb and everyone was stunned how beautiful
the costume looked.
Natasha danced the Legong dance very well, her eyes were quite spooky
and she coped very well with the fan - in fact she was very good and
the great news is she won the competition!!!!
She won a gold medal and to my surprise yesterday she was awarded a
trophy for the highest mark in National Dance.
The photographer couldn't believe his luck when I asked for her photos
to be taken. He said it was the most beautiful costume he had ever seen
and he has been a festival photographer for years.
Anyway, I want to say thank you both again, like I said before none
of this could have been done without all your help.
