Walter Spies, (1895-1942), an artist himself, came to
Bali in the Thirties at the suggestion of the royal family in Ubud.
He told the local artists that they should paint scenes of daily life,
the markets, planting rice, harvesting, temple festivals, dance performances,
and so on. This particular artist, resident in Ubud, and a disciple
of the Western artists, who lived in Ubud in the Thirties, has followed
that advice in his own individual style.
