Secrets of Bali by Jonathan Copeland with

Our Panji puppets are unique puppets handmade by a master puppeteer and carver in a small village in Central Java. They are carved from tropical maskwood and dressed in handmade batik cotton. Every puppet is individually painted and adorned with handbeaten brass ornaments in the old style. The 15th century Panji stories are romantic quasi-historical tales associated with 4 Central and East Javanese kingdoms, Jenggala, Kediri, Gegelang and Singosari. Again and again the leading lady disappears and Panji, the prince of Jenggala, must search for her. He is a pure Javanese hero, like an East Javanese Arjuna, a handsome, brave, noble knight and said to be the ancestor of all Javanese. His name means "standard bearer". Width is measured shoulder to shoulder. They are sold as a pair. It is better to keep man and wife together.
