There are 4 postures: sitting, standing, walking and reclining. There are 3 ways in which he sits: legs folded one on top of the other; legs crossed so that the soles of the feet are exposed and turned upwards; or both legs hanging down as if sitting in a chair. He wears a monk's robe, either covering both shoulders
or open, so that the right shoulder is bare. Sometimes the cloth appears
translucent with energy radiating from his body. His skin is always
smooth and unblemished.
King Wijaya was the first king, installed in East Java in 1294 AD. He died in 1309 AD. The next ruler had no children and was succeeded by his sister, Tribhuwano Tungga Dewi. She ruled for 22 years, before abdicating in 1350, and was succeeded by her son, Hayam Wuruk, who became an illustrious king. The queen and her son were both advised by the famous prime minister, Gajah Mada, who went to Bali in 1343 to bring Bali within the Majapahit Empire.

In one hand she holds a blue water lily, which represents beauty, purity and the flowering of knowledge. In the other is a lontar palm leaf book, which represents literature, wisdom and learning. She holds a loop of religious beads as a sign of endless religious devotion. In her 4th hand is a rebab, a vertical bowed lute with two strings. Her day is the last of the Balinese 210 day calendar, when offerings are made to books, and it's a school holiday. Ironically it's a day when reading is forbidden.
