Murni's
Textile and Cultural Tour
26
July - 3 August 2012

The most spectacular textiles ever produced in Southeast
Asia are the geringsings made only in the small attractive village of
Tenganan in East Bali.
The most striking feature of these double-ikats
is the muted colours - red, reddish-brown, dark blue or black violet.
The designs are built up from little triangles.
The central panel's patterns flow horizontally and vertically in some
cloths and horizontally, vertically and diagonally in others.
Gerinsings are believed to have protective powers,
especially the ability to ward off evil and sickness, and are used in
religious ceremonies.
There are about 20 basic designs. These single
ikat textiles show the patterns of the original geringsing, as well
as new innovative styles. They are considerably cheaper than the thousands
of dollars that double ikat geringsings command.
