Murni's Warung, Ubud, Bali

Renowned antique collector Ibu Murni founded the first real restaurant in Ubud in 1974, and still manages it actively. Perched on a cliff top facing a tropical forest and a holy river underneath, the open-air setting is superb. Many of the objets d’art on the four levels are from Murni’s personal collection.

It’s not just the atmosphere and style that have made it such a favourite amongst residents and travellers but the quality of the food and the reasonable prices.

The food ranges from European and American to Thai and Indonesian. There are daily specials and these are often Balinese traditional dishes, served on important occasions. They include Tuti’s Tutu Ayam, tender chicken, infused with spices, which takes more than 8 hours to cook. "Murni’s Fish" , which won an award in a contest in Nusa Dua, is also recommended. The Balinese Smoked Duck is often cited as the best on the island.

However, it is perhaps the desserts that linger longest in the memory. There’s a wide range of different pies and cakes, all freshly baked on the premises. A wonderful ginger sauce accompanies most of them. The cheesecake rivals any in New York. Murni created the cashew pie herself using cashews instead of pecans which were not available in the early days.

Romantics head down to the lowest level near the river. Expats make a beeline for the Lounge Bar. Murni’s usually in the restaurant or her adjoining shop, keeping an eye on things, and making her guests feel welcome (as do the staff who wear traditional Balinese costumes).

It’s a good idea to go to Murni’s Warung at the beginning of your trip as you’ll definitely want to return.
