South Bali

Kuta - Bali's famous tourist area, which took off in the 1960s with the hippies, home to surf, sunsets, a busy beach scene, Kuta Cowboys, lively nightlife and entertainment. It is not attractive, but neither is it boring. Mads Lange, the Danish trader in Bali in the early 19th century, was based in Kuta. Traffic is bad, so let us know if you want to pass through. Secrets of Bali (Chapter 59) describes the life of Mads Lange.

Denpasar - Museum Negeri Propinsi Bali was established in 1910, rebuilt in the 1920s, used for storage until 1932, when Walter Spies became its first curator and created a museum of significant pieces. Located in the capital, it contains architectural styles, stone sarcophagi, bronze objects, everyday pieces, dance costumes, masks and textiles. Open 8am - 3.45pm on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and 8am - 2.45pm on Saturday. Closed on Monday. There is a small entrance charge. Secrets of Bali (Chapter 59) describes the life of Walter Spies and there are many chapters on the subjects dealt with in the museum.

Denpasar - Puputan Square opposite the museum is the site, now a park, where the king of Denpasar, then called Badung, confronted the Dutch in a suicidal stand against the Dutch in 1906. Secrets of Bali (Chapter 11) describes the event.

Sanur - Bali's more upmarket beach area has a stone pillar dating back to 913 AD describing military victories more than 1,000 years ago. Secrets of Bali (Chapter 7) describes the Early Balinese Kings. It is Bali's oldest dated structure. Sanur was home to early Hindu priests from the 13th-16th centuries. Secrets of Bali (Chapter 34) describes Bali's priesthood and (Chapters 18, 19, 20, 21, 36 and 37) religion.

Sanur, then a quiet fishing village, was liked by the early 1930s Westerners in Bali, such as Miguel Cavurrubias, Walter Spies, Jane Belo and Katharine Mershon, who all spent time here. Secrets of Bali (Chapter 34) describes these people and the first high-rise hotel in Bali, the Bali Beach Hotel, in Sanur.

Sanur, Museum Le Mayeur - Belgian artist Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merpres, lived in this beautiful Balinese house on the beach from 1935 to 1958. His paintings from Bali, Africa, India. France, Italy and the South Pacific are displayed. Some of the early Balinese ones are on palm fibre as he couldn't get canvasses. Open 8am - 2pm on Sunday to Thurday and 8am - 11 am on Friday and 8am - 12.30pm on Saturday. There is a small entrance charge. Secrets of Bali (Chapter 47) describes the various styles of Balinese painting.

Uluwatu - Pura Luhur Ulu Watu is one of the oldest and most important temples in Bali. It is a sea temple founded in the 11th century, perched dramatically on the south-west tip of Bali on top of cliffs overlooking pounding surf and surfers. It is especially beautiful at sunset when the sacred monkeys play throughout the temple. Don't wear anything shiny that will attract them. There is a small entrance charge. Secrets of Bali (Chapter 42) describes the temple.

Jimbaran Bay - End the day at the white sandy beach of Jimbaran Bay, reputedly the best beach in Bali. A great place to enjoy a sunset over the ocean and a relaxing dinner of freshly caught local fish while watching the planes arrive and take off from the airport which is about 10 minutes' drive away. We recommend the red snapper.
