Background: Dangdut is a craze among Indonesians. The word comes from the sound of one of the instruments. Dangdut songs are generally sensual and sad. They are about romance and suffering. They give advice. They are direct, bold, dynamic and popular.

The music has strong Arab and Indian influences, as well as Latin-American. It has spread quickly throughout the country since the 1950s and is now absorbing pop and rock forms.
