Antique Kris Handle 1

Material: Wood
Style: Lampung, Sumatra, Indonesia
Size: Height 9 cm, (including stand) 18 cm, Width 6 cm
Order Number: MHSAKH1

The hilt of a kris is generally made of wood, but can be gold, silver or ivory, and is about 4 or 5 inches long. It is bent at its middle point, sometimes almost at right angles, to create a pistol grip.

It is always carved, sometimes as a man or the head of a bird, or just a geometric shape. The bird was originally Garuda, but was made more and more abstract and remote by Islamic zeal against likenesses of living forms. Garuda, with the head of a bird and body of a man, was Vishnu’s vehicle. Some are foliated or like a cobra. Balinese hilts may have human figures.

A loose-fitting silver or brass lotus-cup ring is attached to the base of the hilt.

70-80 years.

Please ask for the price (or make an offer).

Order Number: MHSAKH14

About 60-70 years.

Filing and blackening of teeth at puberty took place in the Lampung region of South Sumatra. It demonstrated a marriageable age. These besihung collected soot from burned twigs.
Blackening teeth stopped at the beginning of the 20th century. It was accompanied by ritual feasting and was associated with the supernatural. The metal container was pointed to the river and was moved downstream during the ceremony.

Balinese Kris

Material: Iron nickel blade; wood sheath with silver decorations; 8 rubies, 1 onyx, 2 red stones, 1 turquoise, 1 malachite, 1 lost stone on grip
Style: Bali
Size: Blade: Length 47 cm; Handle: Length 18 cm
Order Number: K1

The kris is a dagger. The blade broadens towards the hilt, where one part protrudes more than the other. The blade may be straight or wavy – this one is wavy. The straight one symbolises the mythical snake, naga, at rest and the wavy one its movements.

The Balinese kris has a character of its own. The average Balinese kris is longer and heavier than others. The blade is made of iron, nickel and steel and the line of the blade is tight.

The whole back is encased with a silver oversheath, parts of which are intricately engraved. The silver top and bottom are also engraved.

Apart from being a weapon, a kris is endowed with magical powers. It can protect and bring prosperity to its owner. It plays an important part in Balinese wedding ceremonies and is worn on formal occasions.

Offerings are presented and prayers are said during the making of a kris on auspicious days. It is treated with care and respect. When it is not worn, it is presented with offerings and sprinkled with holy water every 210 days on Tumpek Landep.

The silver shaft ring located between the hilt and the blade is inlaid with precious stones stressing the elevated status of the owner.

Examples are shown in Traditional Weapons of the Indonesian Archipelago, Albert G. Van Zonneveld, C. Zwartenkot Art Books, 2001 at pages 64-68.

Please ask for the price (or make an offer).
