Lombok, Bali’s neighbouring island, is famous its hand made decorated terracotta pots, vases, plates and jugs, which were originally used for various purposes, such as food preparation. A village usually specialises in one craft.

The fine workmanship has been passed down from mother to daughter since the early 16th century.

Young girls learn how to shape and mould the pots, using primitive tools and local clay. They don’t use potters’ wheels. The pieces are hand thrown. Sometimes they use a round stone and wooden paddle. The men fire the pots and the children decorate them.

Beautiful, even if it does leak!

Late 20th century.
