Material: Bronze, brass, iron
Style: Tibet
Size: Height 6 cm, (to top of the handle) 10 cm, Length 14 cm
Order Number: MHSATTB1

Himalayan men would wear a tinder box (icag) on their belts as a sign of prestige.

Tinder boxes were used to make fire before friction matches. They fitted inside a pocket or hung from a belt. To start a fire you would strike the piece of iron against the flint and create a spark close to a cloth, which would ignite the cloth. Tinder boxes were gradually replaced by friction matches, which were invented around 1827.
