Bodhisattva Tara 1

Material: Bronze, gold plated
Style: Tibet
Size: Height 22 cm, Width 15 cm, Depth 9 cm
Order Number: MHSBT1

Tara is one of the pre-eminent female figures in Buddhism. She has been worshipped as a female bodhisattva and counterpart of Avalokiteshvara, the compassionate bodhisattva, since around the 6th century AD. Several compassionate kings and spiritual leaders have been regarded as incarnations of Avalokiteshvara, including the Dalai Lamas, who are believed to be Avalokiteshvara in human form. A bodhisattva is any person who is on the path towards Buddhahood.

Some legends say that when Avalokiteshvara was looking down from heaven at the world of suffering and crying from his powerlessness to prevent all the pain, the goddess Tara was born from his tears, or from a lotus growing in one of his tears. Some legends say that two Taras were born: a peaceful white Tara from his right eye, and a fierce green Tara from his left eye.

Tara represents all the past, present and future miracles of the Buddha.

Tara is worshipped primarily in Tibet and Nepal. She is believed to be reincarnated in pious women.

She is beautiful and her right hand is usually in the gift-giving gesture. Her right leg extended forward symbolises her readiness to spring into action and save others. Tibetan Buddhism has at least 5 coloured Taras – yellow, white, green, red and blue – which represent her different aspects.
