This incense burner was made most probably in south Sumatra.
It is made of unglazed terracotta. It was used to hold and burn kenenyan (frankincense) and scented wood chips.
Glazed pottery was not made very much in Southeast Asia because it was easy to import it from southern China.
The terracotta can crumble because it is fired at low temperatures, yet the condition is very good. It has a good patina consistent with its age.
Late 19th – early 20th century.
