Book Reviews
I cannot recommend the book highly enough.
I visited Burma, now Myanmar, in 1996. It was ‘Visit Myanmar Year’. Almost no-one else came it seems. But the next year Jonathan Copeland and his partner Murni did, and they were treated to a combined dance and puppet performance in Mandalay staged just for the two of them. It obviously inspired Copeland. And now after reading Burmese Puppets: The Small Dolls of Burma I am inspired too and planning another trip—as soon as present pandemic conditions allow, with the purpose of visiting Ahlone Township and seeing for myself the puppet performances of U Khin Maung Htwe. The book has stirred in me an interest in this ancient art. The photography is extraordinary. I cannot recommend the book highly enough.
