Sawu, also known as Savu, Sabu, Havu, and Hawu) is the largest of a group of three islands, midway between Sumba and Roti, west of Timor. Ancient customs have strongly survived.
It is remote and renowned for its textile prowess. They have archaic banded arrangements.
Selimut is Indonesian for blanket, shawl or shoulder cloth. In Indonesia they are usually finer than in the West and are worn over the shoulder as a man’s mantle or wrapped around the body. In Sawu they are fringed.
