Umbrellas in the Hindu-Buddhist world are symbols of high office. They are held above rulers by retainers during processions or while the ruler is seated. No Balinese ceremony would be complete without them.
The Barong is always shaded by one or more umbrellas and temples are always decorated with them during ceremonies.
Umbrellas as symbols of state can be traced back to Ancient Egyptian wall paintings and the bas-reliefs of Assyria. The Greeks used them. In India, in the 3rd century BC, Emperor Ashoka used them as a symbol of Buddha’s bodi tree.
Because of the length of the stick, we have to ship umbrellas by cargo to a port, but that runs the risk of mould. Please tell us your nearest port, where you can collect them or arrange to have them delivered.
Easier, we could send them by regular mail, but that means cutting the stick into two pieces at about 150 cm. We would send both pieces, unless you only wanted one piece, and you would need to get them joined after they arrive.
Please ask for the price (or make an offer).
