Background: In the Ramyana story, Dasamuka’s wife gave birth to a baby girl in his absence. His brother Wibisana put the baby in a casket and floated it down the river. The King of the neighbouring state found her, brought her up and called her Sinta.

To stop Dasamuka finding out, Wibisana created a boy out of dark cloud and called him Indrajit and presented him to Dasamuka as his son.

Many years later Dasamuka captured Sinta and Hanoman, the Monkey warrior, went to rescue her. On his way back from a reconnaissance mission Hanoman was captured by Indrajit, the Crown prince of Langka, and ordered by Dasamuka to be burned alive as a spy.

Hanoman escaped and Rama declared war on Dasamuka. The battle went on a long time. Nobody could defeat Indrajit until Wibisana, who had defected to Rama’s side, told Rama the secret of Indrajit’s birth and how to destroy him.

Rama shot him with his strongest arrow and Indrajit dissolved into a black cloud, which blackened the whole sky and confused the armies.
