Chinese kepeng coins were circulating in Bali in the 7th and 8th centuries. They are sold in stringed bundles of 200, about 12 cm across. Both sides are inscribed. One side has Chinese characters. They have not been used officially as money in Bali since the early 1900s.

The coins are used as offerings on special occasions such as Balinese birthdays, which take place every 210 days, weddings, burials and cremations. They are also used as decorations for temples and shrines.

The oldest kepengs that have been found were cast during the Tang dynasty: 618-907 AD.

Rice barns in Bali are called lumbungs and are built are built on four poles, usually between 1½ metre and 2 metres up from ground level to store rice and avoid rodents and insects.

The upper storage area has an omega shape created by bending flexible framing of bamboo to support the roof.

The roof is covered with alang-alang grass and the sides are made of woven, split bamboo. The section beneath is open with no walls. A floor or platform is constructed of wood and bamboo about 1/2 metre above the ground. This lower platform provides a shady place  to relax.

The coins are over 100 years old.
