Background: In the Ramayana story Rama and Lesmono set off for Langka to recover Sinta who had been abducted. On their way they met Hanoman, the White Monkey. The rest of the monkey army are grey. He was the son of Betoro Bayu, the God of the Winds. They went to the Kingdom of the Monkeys and got Sugriwa’s help.

They arrived at the island of Langka. Hanoman went ahead, leaping over the water that separated the island from the mainland, and discovered Sinta being held by Dasamuka. Dasamuka did not force Sinta and did not realize she was his own daughter. Hanoman watched from a tree and saw Sinta talking to Tridjata, Wibisana’s daughter.

Hanoman approached Sinta and told her help was on the way. He gave her Rama’s ring. Sinta gave the monkey her own ring to bring to Rama.

On his way back Hanoman was captured by Indrajit, Dasamuka’s son and Crown prince of Langka, and was ordered by Dasamuka to be burned alive as a spy.

Wibisana and Dasamuka’s younger brother, Kumbakarna, urged Dasamuka to return Sinta and release Hanoman. He refused. Wibisana then joined Rama.

Dasamuka’s executioners set Hanoman’s tail on fire. The Whie Monkey made a great leap and broke free, setting light to all of Langka’s roof-tops with his tail. One more leap brought him to Rama and Lesmono. Rama decided on war. After winning the war, Rama and Sinta were reunited and returned to Ayodhya with Lesmono and Hanoman. Baroto welcomed them and Rama was crowned.

All three, Bimo, Gods of the Winds and Hanoman, have the long fingernail and wear the sacred chequered, magical, poleng loin cloth, of red (for Brahma), white (for Siwa or Batara Guru), black (for Wisnu and Kresna) and yellow (for Surya, the sun god) check.
