Wayang Gambiong are the rarest of all Indonesian puppets. The Indonesian puppet theatre dates from before the 9th century, before Hinduism came to Indonesia.

Originally the puppeteer was a shaman priest, who invoked communications between people and the spirits of their ancestors. There are about 300 shadow puppets, which are two-dimensional characters cut from buffalo hide.

Occasionally there were 3-dimensional puppets called Wayang Gambiong, the finest of the puppets, made of wood, and dressed in  precious materials  with rich jewelry. They performed at the closing of the ceremony.

At least 90-100 years old.
