This highly decorative trap (jebak puyuh) was used to catch birds – quails – in the jungle.

Sumatran aristocrats and sultans enjoyed catching quails and their traps were very decorative with sophisticated woodcarving and basketry. There are 2 small bamboo canisters inside to contain water for the quails.

The entrance is based on the ceremonial gate (gunungan) to an aristocratic Sumatran house. There are 7 metallic bells and 2 iron rings at the front.

To trap the male quail you lift the front gate. There is a wooden floor. Tie a tame female quail inside by her leg. This will attract males which will go inside and dislodge a stick keeping the gate open. This drops down trapping the male bird inside.

The owner of the trap will pass the iron rings over both ends of the gate. There is a metal handle at the back. He can then take the birds away.

It is in very good condition.

There are examples in Spirit of Wood: The Art of Malay Woodcarving by Farish Noor and Eddin Khoo, Periplus Editions, 2003.

Early – mid 20th century.
