Thai village crafts have developed through the principle of form following function using readily available materials, such as rattan, bamboo, wood, clay, reeds, coconuts and leaves, as these are the easiest to obtain.
Rattan is a tropical climbing palm, using long thorns to climb up other jungle plants, and reaching lengths of over 150 metres (490 feet) but only a few centimetres thick. It belongs to the palm family. It is very strong and grows best in dense tall jungle.
This container or jar was used to hold and pour a local drink, such as rice wine. To make it even more durable the woven rattan was lightly lacquered. It is from northern Thailand, where the use of lacquer is more common than the rest of the country.
Late 19th – early 20th century.
