This is a Maya woman’s faja (belt) made in Totonicapan, Guatemala, but used in villages throughout the Guatemalan Highlands.

The fine designs are woven into the Totonicapan belt as it is made. The belt is completely filled with these designs. Common designs include birds, ducks, roosters, peacocks, horses, rabbits, cats, dogs, people, buses, cars, pine trees, trees of life, stars, pitchers, and many other things. The colours are attractive: blues, greens, purples, reds, yellows, pinks, orange.

Hand woven on a small blackstrap belt/hair ribbon loom. Excellent condition for its age and very fine weaving.
