Background: This pendant style is from Tanimbar in the South Moluccas. The Tanimbar islands are on the far southeastern edge of Indonesia about 300 miles north of Australia. Until the 20th century they were largely left alone.

Gold jewelry indicated superiority between rival groups. It was also used in marriage alliances and became family heirlooms. This pendant represents a human being. The chest is engraved. It would be a family heirloom.
