Background: Batiked sarongs usually have a broad band (1) called the kepala (head). The remaining larger part (2) is the badan (body).

The triangles (3) are called tumpal. The 2 standing rectangular vertical bands (4) are called papan.

Various interpretations are given to the tumpal: crocodile teeth to scare evil away, mountains, palm-trees.

The Chinese-inspired pattern of small animal and flower motifs is called lokcan, literally lok – silk and can – blue. Usually in silk, but also in cotton, this textile is from Rembang in North Java.

The pattern is worn for ritual and festive use in Bali and the Minangkabau areas of Sumatra.
