These courtly Loro Blonyo figures, or the ‘Inseparable Couple’ are part of traditional Javanese belief. They are fertility symbols and represent the sanctity of marriage within Javanese culture.
In Javanese, Loro means ‘two’ and Blonyo means ‘makeup’. Loro Blonyo means two people (bride and groom) with makeup. They wear the dodot, the traditional Javanese wedding dress; the male has headgear and the female wears a kemben, a shoulderless, sleeveless garment wrapped around the upper torso. Both wear jewelry.
Loro Blonyo are the personification of Dewi Sri and Dewa Sadono. Traditional Javanese society believes Dewi Sri is the true owner of the home. Loro Blonyo represent unity and reproduction and therefore the continuity of the family.
Dewi Sri is the goddess of rice, fertility and prosperity and the female aspect of Vishnu. Dewa Sadono is her consort. They sit side by side in traditional Javanese clothes in the main room of the house. They are sacred.
During traditional marriage ceremonies they are placed in front of the ritual marriage bed. The bride and groom take the place of Dewi Sri and Dewa Sadono and sit side by side to be blessed by the goddess herself.
