Antique Kris Handle 1
Material: Wood
Style: Lampung, Sumatra, Indonesia
Size: Height 9 cm, (including stand) 18 cm, Width 6 cm
Order Number: MHSAKH1
The hilt of a kris is generally made of wood, but can be gold, silver or ivory, and is about 4 or 5 inches long. It is bent at its middle point, sometimes almost at right angles, to create a pistol grip.
It is always carved, sometimes as a man or the head of a bird, or just a geometric shape. The bird was originally Garuda, but was made more and more abstract and remote by Islamic zeal against likenesses of living forms. Garuda, with the head of a bird and body of a man, was Vishnu’s vehicle. Some are foliated or like a cobra. Balinese hilts may have human figures.
A loose-fitting silver or brass lotus-cup ring is attached to the base of the hilt.
70-80 years.
