These courtly Loro Blonyo figures, or the ‘Inseparable Couple’ are part of traditional Javanese belief. They are fertility symbols and represent the sanctity of marriage within Javanese culture.

In Javanese, Loro means ‘two’ and Blonyo means ‘makeup’. Dewi Sri is the goddess of rice, fertility and prosperity and the female aspect of Vishnu. Dewa Sadono is her consort. They sit side by side in traditional Javanese clothes in the main room of the house. They are sacred.

During traditional marriage ceremonies they are placed in front of the ritual marriage bed. The bride and groom take the place of Dewi Sri and Dewa Sadono and sit side by side to be blessed by the goddess herself.

The Central Javanese portrayal evolved over time from a classical Indian form to a more human, Indonesian style in posture and dress.
