Hip, Hitched, HoorayAussie brides choose Bali to wed over any other destination. Ian Lloyd Neubauer reveals the island’s most popular venues to say I do.

Set in a velvet-green valley in south-central Bali, Ubud is the spiritual capital of the island. Like something out of a Rudyard Kipling novel, the town is overflowing with Hindu temples – thousands in fact.

Don’t miss the lotus pond-ensconced Pura Saraswati temple, which is next door to a Starbucks, or the Gunung Kawi archaeological park half an hour out of town. And while it’s a no-brainer destination for Hindu weddings, this moss-covered fairytale of a place is also a popular destination for Christian weddings.

The best place to have a meal is Murni’s Warung. A four-story open-air eatery and bar overlooking a jungle-clad bend of the Campuan River, it was the first restaurant to open in Ubud, way back in 1974.

A few blocks away is Murni’s Houses, a traditional Balinese compound with four temple-like houses and an award-winning day spa set in a pixie’s garden.

“Why get married in Ubud? For starters it’s more traditional and authentically Balinese,” says owner Murni who, like many Indonesians, goes by one name only.

“And it’s cooler than the coast, which can be very hot. But the main difference is the scenery – many people like the backdrop of rice terraces for the ceremony.

“I’ve lost count of how many weddings we’ve done over the years,” Murni says. “I enjoyed them all, but the most memorable was the first, as I wasn’t sure we could do it. I was more nervous than the bride.

“We set the place up beautifully for the wedding by the pool: lots of tropical flower arrangements, tall Balinese umbrellas, ritual offerings and an antique table for the wedding book. Then it poured down. We quickly had to change everything, and then have the ceremony in my living room.

“But it all went well. And it gave us the confidence we could do weddings well, because we could deal with the unexpected.”

Just a stone’s throw away from Ubud Main Street, you will find a complex surrounded by a Balinese wall. Inside this secret garden nestles Murni’s Houses, which was once selected as one of the world’s top 10 small hotels by foreign media.

Murni’s Houses offer a wide variety of accommodation, ranging from normal guest room, house to apartment unit. Highlight is the lush and pleasant garden, where is also home to many precious sculptures by Indonesian living treasure Wayan Cemul.

The hotel provides various activities, including scuba diving, bird watching, bicycle tour and many more. Guests are promised to have a fun and unforgettable stay here.

Who are these courses for?

These massage classes are suitable and can be adapted for people who:

  • are absolute beginners
  • have done some massage and want to learn more
  • are considering professional training and would like a short ‘taster’ before committing

Tamarind Spa Massage Classes

Massage Classes.

Teaching Method

We are committed to excellence and teach classic Balinese Massage in such a way that you learn to work intuitively with a ‘listening touch’. By the end of the course, your massage will perfectly suit your client’s needs.

What we teach

We will teach you the most effective, comfortable massage stance and posture, as well as the basic anatomy, which underpins the course work, so that you understand the benefits of massage and recognise when not to massage. We will also cover draping the client and preparing the room and table, and hygiene.

What You will Achieve

Using your practical and theoretical skills, you will be able to take a client consultation and give a full body massage. You will be able to practise on the teacher herself or a member of the Tamarind Spa team under her supervision. This will be a great help to build your confidence and professionalism. We will also give you a massage so that you know how it should feel.

Murni’s Bali Tours

Murni’s Bali Tours

ABOUT MY TOURS

Tours of Bali routinely offered by travel agents and drivers haven’t really changed for decades, at least not since I was a girl. But there are now a lot of exciting new places to visit and I want my guests at Murni’s Houses to see them all: Murni’s Bali Tours.

bali, sunrise Murni's Bali Tours Lake Batur Murni's Bali Tours Mount Batur

I would also like my guests to have helpful and accurate information about these fresh destinations, so I’ve put together a whole new set of trips – Murni’s Bali Tours – and ebook, which you can carry along as an easy-to-read guide.

As well as including the classic jewels in the Balinese crown, Murni’s Bali Tours cover off the beaten track destinations too, special places away from the mainstream. We have covered a range of interests in each new tour, so whether you are a temple lover, an art aficionado or a history buff, there will be something special just for you.

We’ve also included some wonderful short walks, such as a trek through a cool tropical bamboo forest or a walk along the beautifully terraced rice paddies, or even a refreshing dip in a towering waterfall.

As far as possible our drivers will keep off the main roads and personally accompany you to the sites (unless you don’t want them to). Bear in mind that in some places this is not allowed and local guides are required.

Remember that almost every place has a small entrance charge of a few dollars or a donation. This is needed by local people for expenses such as basic maintenance of the buildings and sites.

Food and meals outside the main tourist areas are not usually of the highest standard and sometimes restaurants are hard to find. Please discuss with the driver what time you would like to eat and he will give you the options and an idea of the price you might expect to pay.

Bring sun cream, a hat and your camera. Above all, be ready for adventure and have fun. The great thing about Bali is to expect the unexpected. You never know when you may come across something really important and exciting, like a religious procession winding down the road with a gamelan orchestra or even a temple ceremony with Balinese dancers. That’s why, like me, you need to be ready to change your plans at the drop of a hat and enjoy the moment.

To get inside a temple you need to wear a sarong and sash. You can usually get these in the shop at Murni’s Houses & Spa.
