THE TAMARIND SPA AND BALI BIRD WALK PACKAGE

You will be conducted on a variety of trails around the countryside of Ubud.

Meet at 8.45 am at Murni’s Warung.

Following a brief introductory talk, you set off on your walk, for about 3 1/2 hours, 5 or 6 kilometres, and returning for lunch about 12.30 pm.

Over 100 species of birds are found around Ubud, of which you are bound to see 30 or so, including Indonesian endemics such as Java Kingfisher, Bar-winged Prinia, Black-winged Starling, Scarlet-headed Flowerpecker, Java Sparrow, and many brilliant birds.

You may also see Birdwing and Swallowtail butterflies, different types of rice cultivation, rustic temples and monuments, magnificent trees, stunning scenery, and wildflowers.

Start with the Foot Bath Ritual. It’s a relaxing and health promoting ritual. For many centuries people have been benefiting from Foot Bath Rituals in Bali to improve circulation, relaxation and detoxification.

The organic oils we use are all made in Bali specially for the spa from 100% natural virgin coconut oil and herbs, and are available for sale.

We use the best, sterilised equipment.

When you arrive you will be given a refreshing drink and cold towel.

After the spa treatment, we will serve you caffeine free, organic tea. At the moment we are serving hot and cold Ginger tea with wonderful, healing properties.

Balinese massage is a full-body relaxing, holistic spa treatment that combines acupressure, reflexology, and stretching to stimulate circulation and ease muscular and joint pain. This massage is relaxing and helps balance the energy centres and promote balance and harmony of the mind, body and soul.

Relaxing Massage

Relaxing massage is a full-body relaxing spa treatment that is the same as a Balinese Massage but using softer strokes.

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to reducing stress or improving emotionally-related conditions. Aromatherapy massage uses highly concentrated plant oils, called essential oils, which are added to the massage oil or lotion. When you inhale essential oil molecules, messages are transmitted to the limbic system and affect heart rate, stress level, blood pressure, breathing, memory, digestion, and the immune system. Each essential oil has different healing properties.

Tamarind Spa Hot Stone Massage

Hot Stone Massage has to be one of the most enjoyable and relaxing therapeutic massages available. For hundreds of years, hot stone massage has been used for a wonderfully relaxing massage designed to work on muscle tension at the deepest level.

First a massage, then the hot stone massage treatment using smooth, volcanic stones that have been heated in water; some stones are placed on specific energy centres along the body to align and re-balance the body’s natural energy flow while the therapist continues to perform the body massage.

The deep relaxation and increased blood flow accelerates healing processes and creates a state of deep mental relaxation and reduces stress and anxiety. It is good at relieving muscle tension, rheumatic or arthritic conditions and back pain, while revitalising muscle tissue.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a particularly effective massage for people with muscular pain. When there is muscle tension or injury, there is usually rigid tissue and pain in muscles, tendons and ligaments. This massage technique works on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Deep tissue massage uses slower and firmer strokes and pressure than other treatments.

Lomi-Lomi Hawaiian Massage

Lomi Lomi Hawaiian massage focuses on creating a state of bliss and deep connection. The strokes are long and flowing, often covering the full length of the body. The wave-like motion helps you drift off and you can almost imagine yourself on a seashore lapped by crystal clear waters. It is a gentle treatment but if you would like some deeper work, just let us know. The free-flowing strokes improve circulation and immune response, increase range of motion and flexibility, improve posture, faster healing, slower heart rate and lower blood pressure.

Shiatsu originated in Japan from traditional Chinese medicine, with influences from recent Western therapies. Balinese Boreh Scrub

Balinese Boreh is a traditional herbal scrub used at the end of a hard day to relieve muscle aches, increase blood circulation and create relaxation. Boreh accomplishes this by using heat therapy combined with exotic spices that stimulate the circulation and warm the skin with an aromatic blend. It is also used as a treatment for headaches and fever.

The history is that the hand-crushed spice would be applied on the legs of the rice farmers after a hard day’s work standing in the water tending the rice. The ingredients are a combination of powdered sandalwood, whole cloves, ginger, cinnamon, coriander seeds, rice powder, turmeric root and nutmeg, all ground in a mortar and pestle and combined with water to make a thick consistency.

A masque of the Boreh paste is applied all over your body avoiding sensitive areas, and then your body is wrapped with a cloth to keep the paste in contact with your skin. Deep penetrating heat melts away your tension and invigorates, all the time heating and healing. The masque is left to work its magic.

After 5 or 10 minutes we rub the skin vigorously to cause the paste to fall away, and a shower to remove the remaining paste. A body lotion is applied.

A Dozen Things to Look For When Choosing a Spa

You are probably only in Bali for a short time but you still want to treat yourself. What should you look for in choosing a great spa?

Location

Choose a spa in a peaceful location. You need a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere to enjoy the experience fully. I personally don’t like a place where there are more than five other people having treatments at the same time. I like a quiet, breezy spa with soothing, running water, trees, birdsong and soft music.

Cleanliness

Make sure it’s clean. A good spa is a clean spa. Cleanliness is very important. Cheap spas save money by cutting corners. Bacteria and fungal infections spread quickly if the sheets and towels are not changed and laundered after every single massage and facial. It’s also necessary to clean tools after every pedicure and manicure.

Information and Communication

The spa should be efficient. If possible, a great spa will confirm your booking by email –give them your email address or, better still, email them yourself. The spa should then give you details of how to get there, the time to arrive, what’s included in your package, the price and how to pay. They may even offer you transportation. And of course a reputable spa will be well sign posted.

Therapists

Make sure the therapists are experienced and know what they are doing. You’re placing a lot of trust in your therapist to manipulate your body, and to tone your skin and muscles. The spa’s web site should mention where they’ve worked and their experience. Don’t accept trainees who are learning on the job and practising on you. Don’t let them just go through the motions. Spas can save money by employing inexperienced trainees. If they don’t know what they are doing, they can damage you.

Treatments

Spas usually have a menu listing their services and prices. Do you want a four-handed massage and flower bath? Make sure they offer the services you want. The good ones describe their treatments in the menu. They may have packages including activities and accommodation. Sometimes there are promotions.

Products

A great spa uses first rate products. Organics are best. Beware of cheap spas which use chemical products. If you like their natural product lines, they’ll probably be happy to sell them.

Customer Service

A talented therapist should make you happy, relaxed and comfortable. They should interact with you and concentrate just on you and will patiently explain your treatments. You are going to enjoy yourself much more at a spa like that.

Health and Medical Information

A good spa should give you a medical questionnaire before they start and update it at regular intervals. Based on your medical information, for example, if you have had an operation or are sunburnt or pregnant, the therapist may suggest alternative treatments or even refuse treatments for your own safety.

Thoughtfulness

Spas are about relaxation and getting rid of stress. Do they have a couple’s room to enjoy that special day with your partner? Is there a comfortable seating area to relax in after your visit and have a drink? You should not feel you have to leave immediately after the treatment.

Web Site, Reviews and Awards

Has the Spa won any awards, for example, from the UK Luxury Travel Guide Awards? If you have time look at the spa’s web site. If there are videos you can get an even better idea of the place. Has the owner taken the time to say something on the video? Check reviews, for example, on Trip Advisor, so you can get an overall feeling for the spa – and read several reviews and don’t rely on just one comment as you can’t please all of the people all of the time. Or, even better, pop in yourself, look at the place and meet the therapists.

Tipping

You should not be pressured to tip. Still, a tip is greatly appreciated if you feel your therapist has done a fantastic job. Most people tip between 10 and 15 per cent.

Price

Finally, my best advice is don’t choose a spa just because it’s cheap. You probably won’t get the location, customer service, cleanliness, expert therapists or quality of service you are looking for. I know that running a clean spa with talented staff is not cheap. The best spas don’t skimp on hygiene and justify their prices with skillful staff and professional facilities which can provide you with almost immediate feelings of relaxation and a holistic, rejuvenating and healing experience in a quality environment.

Grand Nikko Hotel, Nusa Dua, Bali

Grand Nikko Hotel, Nusa Dua, Bali certainly has a ring to it. We had to go down to Nusa Dua for a wine-tasting and it was just too far, after all that wine, to drive back to Ubud, so we picked a hotel that had a grand sounding name. Grand Nikko Hotel fitted the bill perfectly and is part of the worldwide Nikko Group of hotels. It’s the only one in the group called Grand. It’s also a grand place for families and kids.

We drove up to the entrance and were met by smiling staff. A nice Balinese man with glasses took our cases. First impressions are so important. We both felt good immediately and went through a smooth and efficient check in and were escorted to our room. There is a wide choice of rooms, suites and villas.

We had an Ocean View room. As you can see, it was spacious, clean and comfortable. I was pleased to see a traditional Kamasan painting hanging on the wall. There was a television with all the international channels, an electronic safe, which could fit a laptop, and complimentary water in the mini-bar.

We didn’t need a buggy, but if your villa is far away, they will actually take you by buggy, driven by a wonderful, smiling girl called Yeni. It’s almost worth booking a villa just for the fun of riding in the buggy.

It’s a big hotel with two wings, built on a 40-meter cliff. The central core of the hotel has an incredibly dramatic view of the Indian Ocean. My jaw just dropped gazing out at the view.

We immediately went down to explore. There’s a really imposing staircase from the entrance down to beach level. They also have elevators.

We saw a very impressive buffet being set up in the garden. They were getting ready for Balinese Night and we felt beautiful, soft breezes on our cheeks wafting off the Indian Ocean.

They had a sucking pig, babi guling, still untouched, but I’m sure not for long, as that’s one of the island’s most famous dishes. There was a vast array of food and there were drinks too.

I’ve got a small hotel in Ubud, Murni’s Houses, grand in its own way, and I know a good hotel when I see one. A good hotel has good energy and the Grand Nikko has lots of energy.

The staff are incredibly helpful – if you look lost, they come up to you and offer to bring you to where you are going. When you pass them in the corridor or meet them in the lift, they say hello and give you a big smile. How nice is that?

The hotel is large. I’m sure I haven’t seen it all, in fact, I know I haven’t seen it all. It has interesting statues and structures all over the place.

Balinese stonecarvers and sculptors are talented and I’m delighted that their works are on display. I particularly liked the three fishermen, back to back, with their shared catch on their heads. It was very appropriate for the ocean setting.

There are many comfortable places to sit and chill out. Tastefully decorated. Of course the whole place has wifi, which is vital these days.

There are eight restaurants, yes, eight, including a Japanese one called Benkay and one called Olooloos. Don’t ask me what that means! They serve Mediterranean food, but outside a Balinese couple welcome you in.

Breakfast is served in The Brasserie. It was very good indeed, regally and lovingly supervised by the charming Balinese sous-chef, Luh Sibang. She has worked there for eighteen years and is still loving it.

There are freshly baked breads, croissants, bagels, muffins, and doughnuts. Orange, tomato, watermelon, papaya and carrot juices. Scrambled, sunny side up, omelettes, poached and boiled eggs. Really whatever you want.

Western, Chinese and Japanese food. Indonesian fried rice, Indonesian fried noodles, chicken or pork congee and Soto Ayam (the famous spicy chicken broth). Unlimited smoked salmon too. Service was impeccable: lots of helpful staff helping you within seconds.

After breakfast there are a whole range of activities – the wonderful beach, of course, but also a fun jungle camp for children, a camel safari ride, fitness centre, tennis courts and sauna. There are probably even more things that I haven’t yet discovered.

There are four, maybe more than four, amazing inter-connected swimming pools, that just have to be seen to be believed, and a 30 metre water slide into one of them. One of them actually has sand coming up to it, which is a genius and safe way of keeping an eye on young childen at the beach.

Just wandering around I came across a wedding in the grounds. Not surprising as it’s a perfect place to get married with the well-kept beautiful lawns, pools and beach. I am sure that the wedding photographs were stunning. Grand Nikko has it all.

The Shore restaurant is ideally situated, yes, on the shore. We had lunch there and Komang, our kindly waitress, suggested that we join One Harmony for free and have 10% off all meals and future stays in the hotel group. We joined straightaway.

I love spas, and in fact, I have one in Ubud, Tamarind Spa at Murni’s Houses, so I am always keen to try them out. It was a real pleasure going to Mandara Spa. I had an excellent therapist, Oka Astini, and enjoyed the experience in a private villa immensely. I can certainty recommend it and have become a member of Mandara Spa.

The only bad thing was leaving, but, for sure I will return soon.

New Spa Ceremony in Ubud, Bali

1st June was not just a day, it was an auspicious day, and it was not just an auspicious day, it was a triply auspicious day. Perfect for a New Spa Ceremony in Ubud, Bali.

The Balinese believe in auspicious days. They are coincidence days, rather like Friday 13th.

So 1st June was a very good day to have the blessing for the opening of Tamarind Spa at Murni’s Houses, Ubud, Bali.
The weather was glorious, which made it a quadruply auspicious day.

Early in the morning Murni and her family and friends prepared the numerous offerings of fruit and flowers, rice and spices, and I even noticed a cooked chicken.

On such days the priests are very busy carrying out ceremonies. We were lucky that he showed up around noon, which made it more challenging for photographs.

He brought his bell, which resonated throughout, and his mantras, and his mudras, which are sacred hand gestures.

The women sprinkled holy water over every corner of the spa, both inside and out. Balinese Hinduism is not called the holy water religion for nothing.

A piece of cloth with magical symbols for protection was attached to the eaves, never to be removed.

A bamboo pole was burnt over a small fire until it exploded frightening away any malevolent spirits that might have been lurking about.

After a couple of hours of mantras, ringing bells, and prayers, the ceremony was over and the spa had received the blessing of the gods and was ready to welcome guests.
