Murni’s Bali Tours

Murni’s Bali Tours

ABOUT MY TOURS

Tours of Bali routinely offered by travel agents and drivers haven’t really changed for decades, at least not since I was a girl. But there are now a lot of exciting new places to visit and I want my guests at Murni’s Houses to see them all: Murni’s Bali Tours.

I would also like my guests to have helpful and accurate information about these fresh destinations, so I’ve put together a whole new set of trips – Murni’s Bali Tours – and ebook, which you can carry along as an easy-to-read guide.

As well as including the classic jewels in the Balinese crown, Murni’s Bali Tours cover off the beaten track destinations too, special places away from the mainstream. We have covered a range of interests in each new tour, so whether you are a temple lover, an art aficionado or a history buff, there will be something special just for you.

We’ve also included some wonderful short walks, such as a trek through a cool tropical bamboo forest or a walk along the beautifully terraced rice paddies, or even a refreshing dip in a towering waterfall.

As far as possible our drivers will keep off the main roads and personally accompany you to the sites (unless you don’t want them to). Bear in mind that in some places this is not allowed and local guides are required.

Remember that almost every place has a small entrance charge of a few dollars or a donation. This is needed by local people for expenses such as basic maintenance of the buildings and sites.

Food and meals outside the main tourist areas are not usually of the highest standard and sometimes restaurants are hard to find. Please discuss with the driver what time you would like to eat and he will give you the options and an idea of the price you might expect to pay.

Bring sun cream, a hat and your camera. Above all, be ready for adventure and have fun. The great thing about Bali is to expect the unexpected. You never know when you may come across something really important and exciting, like a religious procession winding down the road with a gamelan orchestra or even a temple ceremony with Balinese dancers. That’s why, like me, you need to be ready to change your plans at the drop of a hat and enjoy the moment.

To get inside a temple you need to wear a sarong and sash. You can usually get these in the shop at Murni’s Houses & Spa.

Gringo in Paradise wrote a review May 9, 2026

★★★★★ A Hidden Sanctuary in the Heart of Ubud

In all my years of traveling, this has to be one of the top accommodations I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

My time at Murni’s Houses turned out to be one of the highlights of my visit to Bali.

From the moment you arrive, the property creates a sense of peace and serenity. The lush jungle surroundings, traditional Balinese architecture, carved teak details, peaceful pathways, and flowing water features all blend together beautifully. Extraordinary statuary, antiques, and art pieces collected by Murni over decades are thoughtfully placed throughout the property, giving every corner its own sense of discovery and character. The entire atmosphere immediately slows you down and makes it easy to disconnect.

Located just a short walk from central Ubud, Murni’s somehow manages to feel completely removed from the chaos of town. After stepping through the entrance, the noise disappears and you’re surrounded by the sounds of birds, flowing water, and the jungle.

The staff were warm, gracious, and genuinely welcoming throughout my stay. My room was uniquely Balinese in character, comfortable, and full of charm rather than feeling like a generic resort. The private terrace overlooking the grounds was an added bonus and became one of my favorite places to simply sit, relax, and take in the peaceful atmosphere.

Having the spa on the property was also a wonderful convenience. Both massages I had during my stay only added to the overall sense of relaxation and tranquility that defines the entire experience at Murni’s.

Another wonderful touch was being able to order food directly from Murni’s Warung, located just down the road, and have it delivered either to the beautiful open-air veranda and lobby area or directly to my room. The meals I had there captured the flavors of authentic Balinese cuisine beautifully. It also adds another layer of history to the experience knowing that Murni’s Warung, opened in 1974, was the very first restaurant established in Ubud.

One of the absolute highlights was having the opportunity to meet Ni Wayan Murni herself — a true Balinese legend whose contributions to preserving and sharing Balinese culture are remarkable. Sitting down over tea and her famous fried bananas while listening to stories about Bali was an experience I’ll never forget.

This is not the place to stay if you want giant pools, loud beach clubs, or sterile luxury. This is the place to stay if you want to actually feel Bali.

Murni’s Houses feels less like a hotel and more like a peaceful cultural retreat hidden inside the jungle.

Highly recommended for travelers seeking authenticity, tranquility, and genuine Balinese hospitality.

The Mother of Ubud: Finding Bali's Soul at Murni's Houses

For me, that moment came on my third day in Ubud, sitting across from a remarkable woman named Ni Wayan Murni, a plate of fried bananas between us, listening to her tell me the story of her life. By the time I left Bali, I understood that finding Murni’s Houses had been one of the great strokes of luck of my traveling life.

We do not carry out appraisals or valuations. These require a professional expert to see and examine the original piece. Valuations are subjective and require a willing buyer and a willing seller on the open market in a particular location.

We also can’t give an opinion on forgeries or fakes.

We will, however, be happy to give you our opinion of the identity and use of an object based on over 40 years’ experience of buying and collecting.

Insurance

We cannot be responsible for goods in transit after they leave our control.

We insure against loss, damage and destruction, where we can, and on the terms that we can.

You need to contact the shipper to get details of the terms of the current policy.

If your package is damaged, lost or stolen, you have to file a claim quickly.

You will need to show proof of loss, damage or destruction –  especially detailed photographs of the goods and packing on the day of receipt.

Note that post office insurance requires examination of the items in front of the postman who delivers them.

It would be a good idea to take a video and photographs and details of the postman’s name, address and phone number.

In the case of damage, the insurers require a repair estimate. If something can be repaired, the insurers probably won’t give you the full amount paid for the item.

It is difficult to find out the terms of insurance for post office and EMS insurance – DHL is clearer.

Here are some details current as of writing:

  • Sea Mail has doubtful insurance, probably excluding damage caused by mould and damp.
  • Air Mail, Post Office Expor and EMS will not cover limestone or liquids and mould is not covered.
  • Loss or damage as a result of oxidation, pollution contamination and nuclear reactions is excluded.
  • Loss or damage due to force majeure such as: natural disaster, fire, war, riot, action against the government, insurrection, seizure of power or confiscation by local authorities is excluded.
  • Indirect losses or profits is excluded.
  • Maximum cover for air mail is Rp 2,000,000 and for EMS about US$1,000 per package for the goods in the package.
  • Claims for damages can only be made for damaged or lost shipments.
  • Claims for compensation have to be filed promptly –  no later than 2 months.
  • Excluded: Delays caused by difficulties in delivering the shipment to the recipient, including the recipient is being not present at the time of delivery, the recipient arriving late after the call is sent, a PO BOX address.
  • New goods according to the invoice price limit: maximum that can be insured is Rp 20.000.000,00 (Twenty Million Rupiah)
  • Used goods, the value of which is determined by the sender, with the approval of the post office,  Rp  20.000.000,00 (Twenty Million Rupiah)
  • Goods containing art/cultural goods, other personal collectibles and authentic deeds issued by an agency or institution or certain institutions, among others in the form of diplomas, driving licenses (SIM), BPKB, STNK, or other documents are determined based on the cost of processing or making a maximum of Rp. 6.000.000,00 (Six Million Rupiah)
  • DHL will not cover weapons, coins, cash, gold or precious stones. Jewellery has maximum cover of US$500 (but we may be able to get separate cover for higher amounts).
  • Shipping costs are not covered.
